Performance fabric isn’t a type of fiber — in the way that cotton, silk, or polyester are types of fiber. Instead, it’s a broad category of materials.
 
The term is used to describe any durable, cleanable, and stain-resistant fabric. Unlike some materials that basically stain as soon as you look at them (ahem ... silk and chenille), performance fabrics are water resistant, giving you time to wipe up stains before they soak in.
 
These fabrics are also made with abrasion-resistant weaves to prevent snags and tears. And they’re solution-dyed to make them fade-resistant.
 
Multiple types of fabric can fall into the high-performance category, but the majority of performance fabrics are made from synthetic fibers or a blend of natural and synthetic fibers. You might see an acrylic and cotton blend, for example.
 
Some of the big-name performance fabrics include Sunbrella, an indoor and outdoor upholstery fabric made from acrylic; Olefin, an outdoor upholstery fabric made from polypropylene; and Crypton, an eco-friendly indoor fabric made from recycled cotton blends.
